NSW: Victims to give evidence in closed court under proposals
Alleged victims of sexual assault will be able to give evidence in closed court under
new proposals flagged in NSW parliament.
Judges will also be compelled to protect witnesses from intimidating or oppressive questioning.
Premier BOB CARR says the moves will make it easier for women to give evidence in sexual
assault cases.
The proposals also provide for alleged victims to have a support person in court with
them at all times.
And Attorney-General BOB DEBUS will look into the use of video-taped evidence in sexual
assault cases and the possible impact on court proceedings.
Public comment on the proposals is being sought before the legislation is introduced
to parliament.
