A combination of two drug delivery methods: the transdermal patch and the hypodermic needle, could provide a self-administered and painless alternative that could be mailed to individuals to deliver insulin to diabetics or annual flu vaccinations and emergency vaccinations for pandemics like H1N1, without the need to gather groups of people that might spread the disease further. The approach is also being investigated as an alternative to inefficient eye drops for the delivery of drugs to the interior of the eye.
